TMJ Treatment

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in neuromuscular dentistry refers to the joint that connects your skull to your jaw. This joint allows the jaw to move freely, enabling speech, laughter and eating.

Headaches and migraines are common complaints if a problem arises with the TMJ. A misaligned jaw causes the TMJ to become inflamed. Muscles in the face, shoulders and neck begin to spasm and tighten. Additional pressure can also affect nerves surrounding the TMJ which results in a shooting pain.

Our dental team can help you find a solution if you’re suffering from temporomandibular joint disorder. This may include acquiring new fillings or prosthetics to correct an uneven bite causing bruxism (tooth grinding). Implementing relaxing techniques and meditation to reduce stress each day or wearing a custom-made mouthguard while sleeping can assist. Even being taught physical therapy stretching techniques to restore natural movements of the TMJ can be helpful.
